COMMITTED TO UNDERSTANDING WHAT MAKES OUR GIRLS BLOOM...
CONFIDENTLY &
DISTRACTION-FREE.

our PURPOSE

"After recognizing a dire need for safe, non-counterproductive spaces, vital resources, and an honest shot at opportunities—free of distractions, I felt a moral obligation to Black and Brown girls far and wide. Although challenges such as systemic disadvantages, leadership gaps, and intergenerational dysfunction may not affect each girl simultaneously, research has demonstrated the effects of these three key issues on the Black and Brown community at large. For this reason, I am committed to watering our girls, discovering and addressing the root cause of the obstacles they encounter, and laying adequate groundwork so they can rise above conditions or circumstances that have the potential to stunt their growth."

- Inahya, President

our FOCUS

Born out of rarity and necessity, Scattered Seeds Research Project focuses on the social and systemic disadvantages faced by Black and Brown girls. Studies reveal that Black and Brown girls are at a higher risk of teen pregnancy and childbirth complications, disproportionate discipline in schools due to adultification and implicit bias, criminalization, victimization, suicide attempts, and depression. We work relentlessly to increase awareness of how these challenges impact their development and well-being. With our research, we seek to advance knowledge and training and develop effective solutions through practical programs. We also work to increase community engagement and shape the policies and systems that aim to serve our girls.

ourAPPROACH

Our research model emphasizes the interconnectedness of youth, family, and community, recognizing that these elements collectively shape individual and collective experiences. By actively involving youth, families, and community members in the research process, we gain valuable insight that reflects the realities of family and community dynamics on girls' connection to the larger society. This comprehensive approach fosters collaboration and understanding, enabling us to address social and systemic issues more effectively while enhancing the support network available to young girls.

1

Youth Participatory Action Research
(YPAR)

A collaborative methodology in research in which youth are not the subjects of research, but the co-researchers, working alongside research professionals and adult allies to have their voices heard. We favor this approach due to its ability to empower and instill hope in girls.

2

Community-based Participatory Reseach
(CBPR)

A multi-collaborative approach to research that equitably involves organizational representatives, community members, and researchers in all aspects of the research process. The goal is to combine knowledge and action to improve community health, well-being, or social conditions.

3

Data-driven Advocacy & Systems Change

Utilizing evidence and data to push for changes in policies, institutions, and broader systems, such as education, healthcare, criminal justice, or housing, in order to improve outcomes for individuals and communities.

Did you know?

An unintended pregnancy is defined as an undesired pregnancy, one that occurs when a woman conceives sooner than anticipated or when a woman does not desire to give birth at any point in life, but becomes pregnant. Unintended or “unplanned pregnancies” are caused by improper use of contraceptives or the failure to use a contraceptive or fertility-based method to prevent conception. Studies show that unintended pregnancies can also stem from gaps in access to sufficient reproductive healthcare. According to Guttmacher Institute, unplanned pregnancies soar among “low-income women, women aged 18-24, cohabitating women, and women of color.” Black and Hispanic women are disproportionately leading in unplanned pregnancies and abortions. Amid the controversy sparked by the recent limitations of Roe v. Wade, it is high time Black and Brown women become more intentional about their reproductive health. Together, we can help reduce the proportion of unintended pregnancies among Black and Brown communities and the harmful effects surrounding unwanted childbirths, such as child neglect, child abuse, maternal depression, parental stress, marital conflict, and divorce.
